Nicholas D. Wolfwood - A pap Anime: Trigun

Nicholas D. Wolfwood (ニコラス・D・ウルフウッド, Nikorasu Dī Urufūddo), also known as Nicholas the Punisher. Nicholas is a traveling preacher, but contrary to his job as a man of God he's quite devious and violent, a foil to his companion Vash's peaceful and goofy nature. Wolfwood often criticizes Vash's philosophy of not killing, stating that one day he's going to have to. Despite this, he adopts Vash's non-lethal style though he still kills when he feels it's needed. Wolfwood carries a special, large cross-shaped gun called the Punisher, which contains a large machine gun in its bottom section and a rocket launcher at its top. In the anime the sides hold several Colt handguns. Wolfwood's background and development are almost completely different between the manga and anime versions of the character.
In the manga, Wolfwood is a member of the Eye of Michael, an organization of assassins founded by a Plant worshiper. After showing potential in the orphanage in which he is raised, Chapel trains and modifies him, giving him enhanced abilities and the ability to regenerate from heavy injuries using special vials, though he ages much faster than normal. As a result Wolfwood is quite younger than his outward appearance. Because of his altered features and the blood on his hands, Wolfwood's biggest fear involves returning to his home and his friends, being petrified of what they think he has become. Because of his adept skill, Wolfwood is given his signature gun, the Punisher, an honor few members have attained.
Wolfwood later shoots Chapel and takes his place in the Gung-Ho Guns in an attempt to kill Knives. He fails to do so, and is instead sent by Knives to protect Vash until he is able to meet him. For about three full volumes, Wolfwood assumes the role of main protagonist as he combats Chapel and his brainwashed childhood friend Livio while rescuing Vash and defending the orphanage. After Chapel's death and Livio's return to humanity, Wolfwood's internal organs were liquefied from the intense battle and drinking too many regenerative vials. He dies while having a final drink with Vash, his friends from the orphanage welcoming him home overhead.
In the anime, Wolfwood is raised by an abusive guardian, who he later shoots and kills. He is taken in by a different version of Chapel, who trains him to be his successor. He meets Vash while he is stranded in the desert, and the two join forces. Wolfwood's purpose is to raise money for the children in the orphanage he runs, trying to keep other children from suffering as he did in his own childhood. He eventually fights his master, but spares him after defeating him. Legato controls Chapel and forces him to shoot Wolfwood, mortally wounding him. He spends his last moments in a church reflecting on his life and making a final confession before dying. Vash then takes his gun as an act of honor, and uses it in his fight against Knives. During the course of the series, Wolfwood develops a relationship with Milly that crosses from close friendship into romance, sleeping with her shortly before his death.
