Vash the Stampede (ヴァッシュ・ザ・スタンピード, Vasshu za Sutanpīdo) is the main character of the Trigun series. He becomes known as "The Humanoid Typhoon", "Vash the Stampede" and "the first human natural disaster" due to the destruction which constantly surrounds him, and "The $$60,000,000,000(sixty billion double-dollar) Man" because of the enormous bounty put on his head. He is identified by his signature long, red coat. Despite his reputation, Vash is a pacifist with a goofy, easy-going personality, sometimes exaggerating his foolish characteristics to seem more nonthreatening. He shows an almost obsessive love for donuts and he frequently voices the catchphrase, "This world is made of love and peace," which is usually complemented by his flashing of an alternative version of the v sign. Though he becomes serious and frightening when the situation calls for it. Because Vash refuses to kill any of his opponents, he often suffers at the hands of a number of very persistent enemies. As a result, his body is a patchwork of large scars, chunks of missing flesh supported by metal mesh, and stitch marks.

Vash is not a human, but a sentient Plant, an artificially-created being for the purpose of providing water, power and other resources to humans in space. As such, Vash doesn't age past a certain point and is roughly 150 years old. Along with his brother Knives, Vash was discovered as a baby by Rem Saverem, a crew member aboard one of many hundreds of "SEEDS" ships sent from Earth to find a habitable planet for humanity. Rem served as a parent for the two beings during the first two years of their lives and is from which both of Vash and Knives' opposing philosophies originate. In the manga, the two are not a unique case. Before they were born they had a sister named Tessla, who the crew of the ship killed in a battery of cruel tests and operations. Vash's reaction to the discovery was a failed attempt at suicide, leading to him stabbing Rem in the stomach. However, Vash saved her life after realizing what he had done and later listened to Rem's heartfelt apology and request to give humans forgiveness and understanding. In the anime Rem taught Vash and Knives the value of life and how nothing deserves to die, something Vash took to heart.

Through his many decades of experience and unchanging body, Vash attained the status of a legendary gunman. In order to maintain his no-killing way of life, he trained vigorously with his signature .45 caliber revolver so that his speed and accuracy were unparalleled, allowing him to deliver nonlethal shots to his opponents. Contained in his prosthetic left arm is his secondary, emergency gun, later replaced with a powerful machine gun. Vash's powers as a Plant also come into play during his battles in the form of Vash's right arm having the ability to transform into a large cannon dubbed the "Angel Arm". In the manga this weapon creates beams and black holes that completely destroy solid matter and is a natural ability while in the anime adaption it is activated by a special mechanism Knives installed into Vash's gun and only destroys inorganic matter. The manga rendition of Vash finds many other ways to use his Plant abilities besides its large cannon form because he can naturally mold parts of his body into different wing-like forms, such as shields. Vash also has the ability to infuse his Angel Arm into his bullets, which allow them to create miniature black holes on impact. Overusing his Plant abilities shortens his lifespan, slowly turning his hair from blond to black as the series goes on until it's completely black by the end.

A large difference between Vash's character in the anime and in the manga stems from the destruction of July City, the incident that defined his reputation as the "Humanoid Typhoon" and subsequent placement of his enormous bounty. In the manga, Vash inadvertently annihilates the entire city and all of its citizens with his Angel Arm, leading to an endless amount of guilt and subsequent years of repenting. In the anime Vash's power destroys all inorganic matter in the city, leaving everyone alive and contributing to his ideal that he's never killed anyone. The story behind Vash's arm amputation is also quite different in the two media, though Knives is directly responsible for it in both cases.
